Quartz Window Description

A quartz window is a specialized optical component manufactured from high-purity fused silica (amorphous silicon dioxide). Its defining characteristics include high transmittance across a broad spectral range from deep ultraviolet (approximately 185 nm) to near-infrared (approximately 2.5 µm), coupled with a near-zero coefficient of thermal expansion. This grants it exceptional thermal shock resistance and high-temperature stability, allowing it to withstand prolonged exposure above 1000°C while maintaining structural integrity and optical performance. It also possesses high hardness, excellent chemical inertness, and strong resistance to high-energy radiation. These properties make it an indispensable component in extremely demanding environments, such as in semiconductor lithography systems, lasers, high-temperature observation systems, vacuum equipment, and space exploration probes.

Quartz Window Features

  • Broad Optical Transmission: Exceptionally high transmittance from deep UV (~185 nm) to near-infrared (~2.5 μm) wavelengths.
  • Extreme Thermal Stability: Very low coefficient of thermal expansion provides outstanding resistance to thermal shock and high-temperature operation (often >1000°C).
  • High Purity & Chemical Inertness: Made from high-purity fused silica, offering excellent resistance to most acids, water, and corrosive environments.
  •  Superior Hardness & Durability: High surface hardness provides good scratch resistance and structural integrity in demanding applications.
  • Radiation Resistance: Highly resistant to discoloration and damage from high-energy UV, X-ray, or gamma radiation, maintaining clarity.

FAQ

What is a Quartz Window and what is its core composition?

A Quartz Window is a specialized optical component made from high-purity fused silica (amorphous silicon dioxide).

Its most outstanding advantages are the combination of broad-spectrum high transmittance and extreme high-temperature resistance. It efficiently transmits light from deep UV to near-infrared and can operate stably above 1000°C.

It efficiently transmits Deep Ultraviolet (DUV) and even Vacuum Ultraviolet (VUV) light, which ordinary glass cannot. This is crucial for lithography and spectroscopic analysis.

The main differences lie in thermal properties and spectral transmission range. Fused quartz has an extremely low thermal expansion coefficient, far superior temperature resistance, and transmits UV light.

Due to their high purity, resistance to plasma erosion, stability at high temperatures, and ability to transmit light for process monitoring, they are key components for ensuring chamber sealing, enabling in-situ monitoring, and guaranteeing process consistency.
